A wiped drive is only as good as the certificate that proves it. Most ITAD firms hand over a single page that says "all drives erased". Your auditor wants more than that. So do you.
MakeITgood gives you a certificate per drive, with the serial number, drive details, the standard the wipe was performed to, the operator who ran it, the date, and the pass/fail verification. It's the level of evidence ICO investigations expect, and it's standard with every job we do.
Software erasure or physical destruction
For a healthy modern drive, NIST 800-88 Purge software erasure is fully accepted as a permanent data sanitisation method — and it preserves the drive for reuse, which is better for the planet and often returns value to you. For drives that fail verification, drives that can't be unlocked, or where your information security policy mandates it, we escalate to physical shredding to HMG IS5 Higher Standard particle sizes.
Drives we handle
SATA HDDs, SAS HDDs, SATA SSDs, NVMe SSDs, M.2, mSATA, eMMC, and SED / BitLocker / FileVault / LUKS-encrypted drives. Mobile devices and tablets are wiped to manufacturer reset standards with a certificate of factory reset.
For regulated industries
If you operate under FCA, ICO, or sector-specific data handling rules, ask us about our enhanced chain-of-custody protocol — sealed, tamper-evident transit containers, witnessed erasure on request, and a same-day turnaround on certificates.

Frequently asked questions

Ask us directlyWhat standard do you erase to?
We erase to NIST SP 800-88 Rev 1 Purge and align with UK Government CESG / IS5 guidance. Where physical destruction is required, drives are shredded to particle sizes compliant with HMG IS5 Higher Standard.
Do you provide a certificate per drive?
Yes. Every drive — HDD, SSD, NVMe — receives an itemised certificate with serial number, make, model, capacity, method, operator, date, and pass/fail result.
Can you erase encrypted drives?
Yes. We support Opal SED, BitLocker, FileVault and LUKS-protected drives. Where keys are unavailable or the drive fails to verify, the drive is escalated to physical destruction and the certificate reflects that.
Is software erasure as secure as shredding?
For a healthy modern drive, yes — when done to NIST 800-88 with verification. We default to software erasure because it preserves the drive for reuse. Physical destruction is offered for clients who require it for policy reasons.
How do you prove erasure happened?
Drives are wiped on a logged workstation. The output report (Blancco-compatible fields) is bundled into your compliance pack alongside the chain-of-custody manifest.
